Smaug eye sculpture in medallion by TRYBcomPL Smaug eye sculpture in medallion by TRYBcomPL
50mm (1.96 inch) diameter medallion with Smaug eye sculptured of watch parts.
Setting of this medallion is made of an antique brass watch case from over 100 years old pocket watch. It was carefully polished and renewed, but it is still visible that it is not a new reproduction of a pocket watch, but it is a real antique and very beautiful watch case. Moreover, I have reconstructed the mechanism for opening the watch case. That's why the back of the medallion can be opened and closed (to open just gently press the button on the top - the one that was used to wind up the watch).

The Smaug eye is sculptured with watch parts. I wanted to count them, but... after 115th part I stopped counting dragon scales and focused on sculpturing. That was the moment, I had about quarter of an eye ready. So I don't know how many parts I used. Many :) That's it. The Iris of an eye I painted with enamels. The pupil of the eye is made of watch-hand. Whole sculpture is finished with water clear resin.

This medallion is  signed with "T" letter (TRYB sign).
Unique piece of art. I made only one medallion with clockwork Smaug eye. I will not make a copy.

Quotation from "Hobbit" book had been engraved inside of the medallion:
“I kill where I wish and none dare resist. I laid low the warriors of old and their like is not in the world today.
Then I was but young and tender. Now I am old and strong, strong, strong. Thief in the Shadows!”
- I will submit the picture of the back of the medallion too.

Medallion is available on Etsy now:

People should live for admiring pieces of art like that.
It is very uncommon type of art nowadays, isn't it? For me it is definitely one of the most beautiful craft masterpiece!Clap

Wow! Thank you for kind words.
Maybe just sculpturing is uncommon...
And so "time-eating" miniatures hard to sell even below the value of time used to make it.
Anyway - this kind of art is my real pleasure :)

I'm very happy, you like it :happybounce:

This eye took me ca 3 months of work... and ca 400 elements (I estimate this amount, because I stopped counting them after 115th watch part...)

Now I work on next dragon. Tiny one. And whole silhouette this time Meow :3  I really do't know why, but I cant leave dragons theme last time Confused

Yes, I like it.
3 months, oh wow.
I read your description and that you stopped counting after the 115th piece and had only a quarter of it finished.

I like dragons, I'm okay of you keep doing them. :D

Just a thought, could something similar to this be done as the outer clamshell for a pocket watch twith the hands revealed through the eye? That might be really neat.

Sculptured watch-face... (If watch-hands would go around the eye, then it is a watch-face).
Possible, but extremely hard...
Phillipe Patek - I think it would be this level of skills and... price.
But I agree, that it would be very cool.
On the other hand - I don't make copies of my unique works, because that would be no fun to make the same eye once again :)
If some day I will focus on decorating "living" watches,  I 'll make brand new projects :D

Congrats on the DD, love you skill wonderful gallery.  CURSE YOU! :happybounce: :happybounce: :happybounce:    I enjoy this type of art and follow another artist very similar to you, you may enjoy having a look at his work.  amechanicalmind.deviantart.com…

While he also uses watch parts he builds miniature creatures, but the dedication to both or your craft abilities is impressive.

Thank you a lot! It is true, that it is not easy to work with this material. Watch parts are not like puzzle... ;) but I love what I do and appreciate effort and skills of everyone who works with this wayward material.
